Clustering of theories according to communication field
Why do communication scholars cluster theories according to communication field?
Before we go into why scholars cluster theories, we need to know what is cluster and theory. To put in a simple word, cluster is a class or a big title for something. In the context of communication studies, cluster is a big group where a lot theories will be divided or will be arrange into their own class/cluster. Below are the example of diagram to explain between cluster and theory 👇
There are few reasons why scholars cluster theories according to communication field. The reasons are:
- There a lot of communication theories and most of it cannot be use in more than 1 communication field.
In communication field, there are a lot of communication theories to explain, describe and prescribe a research or a phenomenon. However, most phenomenas fall into a lot of categories. Therefore, the categories made the clusters exist. Theories must be classified into appropriate clusters because most theories cannot be use in other cluster and that it cannot explain certain phenomenon that falls into certain cluster.
For example, the phenomenon I want to explain is about human behaviour while communicating. Therefore, I can take some of the theories in media, culture and society cluster to explain about the phenomenon while the theories in mass communication cluster cannot explain it.
However, some cluster shares the same theory. For example, Cultivation theory falls into Mass Communication cluster and Media, Culture and Society cluster. It can occur because some phenomenon links with more than one clusters. - It is time saving.
As we all know, there are a lot of theories in communication field. Therefore, by clustering all the theories into more specific clusters can help someone that wants to explain a phenomenon or research. For example, Ali did a research on how often lecturer use social media platform to teach and give out notes to their students through that medium. Therefore, Ali is searching the suitable theories by checking out the clusters first. - It makes new learners in communication studies understand about the subject easier and better. Most of the scholars now and then are educators. When scholars came up with an idea, theory or any research, one of their aim is to make their students to understand the topic better. Therefore, clustering the theories can actually make the students' life easier during their studies.
